Uttlesford Council - Case Study


The brief

To design a bright, inviting and practical staff room with a café vibe and a separate, more informal, relaxed area. The intention was to encourage more of their staff to use the break-out area, by designing an attractive space with comfortable furniture and improved sound quality.

Q Office Furniture were invited to showcase our design at a mini-exhibition and we were delighted to be voted, by the selection panel, as their favourite.

The design

Our design incorporated brightly-coloured café chairs with modern chrome frames, which are not only extremely comfortable but are tested to BS4875:2001 test level 4 for strength and durability. The seat pads were upholstered in coloured vinyl for practical cleaning. White circular dining tables with chrome bases were chosen to complement the seating, together with matching bar stools for the kitchen area.

For the meeting area we installed rectangular ‘flip-top’ tables on castors, which can be arranged in various combinations. These tables are easily flipped up and pushed aside, as required. We included an easy-access, side-opening tambour cupboard to house the equipment required for meetings.

In the relaxed area we changed the position of the soft seating to create a cosy environment. The arm chairs with oak hardwood frames and comfortable cushions, were suited with oak frame coffee tables for a homely feel. We collaborated with their selection panel to choose the fabric colours, which resulted in a welcoming and relaxing space. To reduce the noise levels, we relocated the vending machine and installed lockable wall storage, for the vending stock, against the back as a noise-dampening solution. We finished off this area by adding a couple of funky upholstered stools and a co-ordinating coffee table.

The kitchen area was completely reconfigured, whilst we had our own ideas, for further insight we spent time observing how the kitchen was currently being utilised. A larder fridge was top of the list, together with an eye-level oven, built in microwave and integrated dishwasher. We opened up the area and incorporated a breakfast bar into the design to form a sleek and spacious work surface. We added matching comfortable bar stools, thus creating a more sociable environment.

Acoustic rated vinyl flooring was installed in the main area, to reduce the impact noise created by the moving around of furniture as people are coming and going. This flooring also has optimal resistance to indentation and is easy to keep clean. In the relaxed area heavy-wear classified carpet tiles were fitted, creating a softer feel here and a distinction between the two areas.

We managed the project from start to finish, enlisting the services of our fit-out partners for the renovation works. Our team installed the furniture the day after the flooring was finished and the feedback from our client was extremely positive.
